Most travellers in Morocco are comfortable on around 1–1.5 GB per day if they're mainly using maps, messaging apps and light browsing, and closer to 2–3 GB per day if they're also streaming music, sharing photos to social media, or making regular video calls home.

The short answer, by trip length

Trip lengthLight useBalanced useHeavy use
Weekend (3 days)~1.5 GB~3 GB~7 GB
One week~3 GB~7 GB~15 GB
Two weeks~6 GB~14 GB~30 GB

These are planning estimates, not measured averages — actual use varies a lot by how much you stream and navigate. When in doubt, buy a slightly larger bundle; topping up is usually easy and cheap, running out mid-hike is not.

What actually uses your data

Light users (~0.4 GB/day)

  • Messaging (WhatsApp, iMessage)
  • Occasional map lookups
  • Light social media browsing

Balanced users (~1 GB/day)

  • Live GPS navigation most of the day
  • Regular photo uploads/social posting
  • Voice notes and occasional video calls

Heavy users (~2.2 GB/day)

  • Music or podcast streaming while walking/driving
  • Daily video calls
  • Using your phone as a hotspot for a laptop

Add extra if you'll be

  • Relying on live navigation on long drives (add ~0.3 GB/day)
  • Working remotely and need video meetings
  • Uploading lots of photo/video content

Estimate your trip

10 GBestimated for 10 days

Based on roughly 1.3 GB/day. Add a buffer if you'll be streaming video or making video calls daily.

Tips to make data last longer

  • Download offline maps before you go — Google Maps and Maps.me both support offline regions, which is especially useful in the Sahara and mountain routes where you may have no signal at all. See Chefchaouen and other destination guides for area-specific advice.
  • Use Wi-Fi for updates and backups. Most riads and cafés offer Wi-Fi; save large downloads, app updates and photo backups for when you're connected to it.
  • Lower streaming quality in Spotify/YouTube/Netflix settings while on mobile data.
  • Turn off background app refresh for apps you don't need constantly updating.
  • Check your data balance via your operator's app or a USSD code, so you're not surprised mid-trip.

Frequently asked questions

Roughly 0.3–0.7 GB per hour at standard definition, more at high definition. Lowering the app's video quality setting makes a noticeable difference over a multi-day trip.

No — once a map region is downloaded over Wi-Fi, navigating within it uses no mobile data, only your phone's GPS. This is the single best way to cut data use on long drives.

Both work; topping up is simple with all three networks via their apps or any shop. Buying slightly more than your estimate upfront avoids the small inconvenience of topping up mid-trip.
