SIM vs eSIM vs roaming vs Wi-Fi
There's no single right answer — it depends on your phone, your trip length and how you'll use data. Here's how the four options actually compare.
| Option | Setup effort | Typical cost | Keeps home number? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local physical SIM | Medium — buy in person, bring passport | Low | No (unless dual SIM) | Trips of 4+ days, heaviest data users |
| Local eSIM | Low — install before you fly | Low–medium | Yes (dual SIM) | Compatible phones, no time for a queue |
| Home carrier roaming | Lowest — works automatically | Varies hugely by carrier | Yes | Very short trips, carriers with a good travel pass |
| Wi-Fi only | Low, but limited | Often free at hotels/cafés | Yes | Light use, mostly staying at one base |
A simple way to decide
- Trip under 3 days and light use? Check your carrier's Morocco roaming rate first — it might be genuinely competitive.
- Phone supports eSIM and is unlocked? An eSIM installed before you fly is the least hassle for most trips.
- Longer trip, heavy data use, or eSIM not supported? A local physical SIM from an airport kiosk or operator shop is usually cheapest.
- Mostly staying in one hotel or riad with good Wi-Fi? You may not need mobile data at all beyond occasional maps use — consider a small data-only bundle as backup.
